Sarkeet Movie Review: Brilliant performances by Asif Ali, Orhan

Sarkeet Malayalam Movie Review: This Asif Ali-starrer is a gentle, powerful and heartwarming film in the way it depicts relationships and how a child's world is brought to life with a dose of harsh reality that threads adult relationships. It's not your typical masala formula movie with slapstick comedy - this is a transformative film that explores the relationship between stressed out adults and a child with ADHD.

This is not a film for those who want a fast-paced family entertainer. This is also not for those who want an 'ephemeral kick' as Shri K Jayakumar IAS, noted lyricist and award winning poet, once referred to in an interview about poetry and stories.

Simply put, Director Thamar's 'Sarkeet' is a heartwarming film.

Sarkeet Malayalam Movie Review: Story, Star Cast, Theme

While exploring themes such as  a child's ADHD condition and how it takes a toll on the already stressed out parents, Stephy (starring Divya Prabha) and Balu (Deepak Parambol) portray the tumultous nature of their relationship with precision. In fact, the movie evokes so many rollercoaster emotions that are intrinsic to human nature. Jeppu, their little boy, is more than a handful for them which puts them in a grave dilemma when they come home to find that their son has vanished even as they are struggling with balancing their professional lives.

Ameer (starring Asif) is a desperate young man. As we know, desperate times call for desperate measures - and yes, he almost becomes a thief. The dilemma of a young man who is tempted by fate and tricked thereafter is a spectacle that only the finest nuances of gentle and slow storytelling can take us through.

As an artist, Asif Ali is emerging as one of Malayalam cinema's finest actors, understated and poised, yet a powerhouse that remains to be tapped much more.

When an actor prioritises art and storytelling over glamour and glitz, it mark a huge leap of confidence in what he believes himself to be capable of.

There's so much untapped potential in this fine actor - it is up to good directors and producers to make the most of such talent!

Meanwhile, Orhan, the child artist, is brilliant and evocative in every scene. Scenes where he 'misbehaves' are a showstopper. He almost steals the show from even Asif!

This Asif-Ali starrer 'Sarkeet' conveys through every scene why mindful parenting is the need of the hour when addressing and correcting a child's behaviour.

A troubled childhood is often rooted in parental neglect and a turbulent relationship between the parents, all of which are gently braided into the story arc of this film.

Sarkeet Movie Review: Remembering Mani Ratnam's 'Anjali'

As an avid movie enthusiast, I remember watching Mani Ratnam's 'Anjali' when I was a teenager. The story was heartwrenching, especially the child's fragmented relationship with the mother. While portraying the child protagonist and the troubled parents balancing their problems amidst a biased society, the refreshing hues of laughter and optimism also shone its way through despite the tragic end. Of course, all of us loved 'Anjali' and couldn't bear the tragic end but the story transcended the tragedy itself - it became a celebration of childhood innocence rather than a tragedy about a child who wasn't "normal" by a biased society's standards.

Sarkeet Movie Review: What Could Have Been Better?

In Asif Ali starrer 'Sarkeet', the complexity of the child's condition receives a shadowy treatment that could have been given a more refreshing, optimistic story arc. A discordant pacing of the first half and the second half of the film impacts the viewing experience. After a point, the film turned dark, melancholy and distressing, especially the scenes where the child is locked up.

At a time when violent thrillers and gangster films have become dominant in Malayalam cinema, it is refreshing to see Asif Ali deliver heartwarming and outstanding performances through carefully chosen films such as 'Sarkeet'.

Saree Woes 2

Our earlier discussion on Saree Woes really perked up my spirits. A big thanks to all of you for pepping me up. Okay, here's the good news. There was an unexpected late night party that I had to attend in Gurgaon. To be honest, I haven't had the time or energy to attend any such parties after Adi was born. I was sure I wouldn't have the confidence to make conversation with the glitterati, let alone feel confident to carry off wearing a saree. This is one of those parties where you have to be dressed very formally. Well, at the end of a working woman's day, you hardly feel ready to attend one of these parties looking like a moron, right? So, with very little preparation and very few hours left, I called on all the gods in Heaven to help me look a little younger and prettier since I don't have the magic to look young all on my own. Although I was tempted to wear one of my awesome Kancheevaram treasures, I knew it would be very difficult to drape it without any h...

Lord, thank you for your love and grace in every moment of my life and for finding me worthy of this award.  A big thanks to Nivedita for this Award. I don't know if I deserve it but you make me feel that I do. You, the reader, helped me improve through every post. Your feedback and suggestions motivated me to write in the only manner that I know: from the heart. Thank you all for the love and patience. A big thanks to all my Twitter friends who have placed their trust in me and humbled me with their overwhelming support, friendship and acts of kindness. As the rules for accepting this blog award make it necessary for me to share 7 facts about myself, here we go: 1. Kochi is my favorite city. It's in my soul 24X7. 2. I dislike certain traits in people such as dishonesty/corruption, boasting, constantly finding fault or being judgmental about others to camouflage their own faults, leading purposeless but extravagant lifestyles and taking advantage of friendships for wrong...

What's Your Favorite Cake?

Khan Market is one of my favorite places, not only because it is a place where stories can be plucked from people's conversations and mannerisms but this is an amazing hub for food lovers. You can find all types of food that is sure to appeal to your sense of taste. Here is a yummy walnut cake from Sugar&Spice. From the moment you enter their store, you will find yourself bumping into either foreigners looking through different types of cheese (Belgian, French, Danish etc) or Indians who pretend to be just like the foreigners wearing those outrageously expensive 'phoren' perfumes and even sounding like them! God, when will we learn to respect being us, I really don't know, but I couldn't resist this walnut cake. It has a slightly nutty flavors and isn't all that sweet but if you like tasting exotic stuff, this one's for you so have it! What's your favorite cake? Do you make it or buy it? Tell me all about it.
