How do you light Deepam at home?

How do you light deepam at home? As a child, I loved watching the ritual of my grandmother lighting the deepam or the traditional lamp at home in the evenings. A sense of serenity accompanied her frail figure as she would carefully straighten every wick, dip it into the tiny puddle of oil and light the lamp.

As my grandmother would read out the scriptures and chant the prayers, the fragrance of incense sticks and flowers added depth to the experience.

In many Hindu homes nowadays, the lighting of the lamp (or the nilavilakku, as Malayalis refer to the traditional lamp in their homes) is not a regular practice. A lot of people have many questions around how to light deepam at home and which oil to use and so on.

An important point to keep in mind - Maintain physical cleanliness and hygiene while lighting the lamp. Wear clean clothes while lighting the lamp.

The most essential factor is unwavering focus and concentration when you light the lamp every evening.

Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba teaches us:

"Regard your heart as a radio receiver. Your concentration is the tuning device. You will experience the Divine when you tune your heart properly. This calls for firm, unwavering concentration."

Over time, you will become familiar and be able to chant it. You can also keep it simple by starting with a chant such as "Om Ganeshaya Namah".

Always remember to invoke the blessings of your Kul Devata, Dharma Devata and Para Devata daily. Without their blessings, no efforts in sadhana can receive blessings unless we remember and invoke their grace.

You can chant whatever prayers are usually offered in your home. You can also chant simple mantras such as 'Om Namah Shivaya' or 'Om Krishnaya Namah' or 'Om Saravana Bhavaya Namah' based on your Ishta Devata. Remember, it is important to chant the same mantras consistently.

When you pray with a pure heart, wishing no one any harm or ill will, there will always be God's grace and blessings on you and your family.

Thanks @Nikhil for reading this post and sharing your thoughts. Our ancestors and elders were far wiser than we are, though they lived without Google and had no access to the Internet. They knew the importance of energy as the core of every thought, word and action. The very routine of reading the Ramayana every evening with children sitting around the family elder sounds almost unbelievable today as most homes, as you mentioned, no longer follow this deepam ritual. While I grew up seeing the women in our home do this every day, this is increasingly not followed in homes where there is a different approach to sampradaya practices, mostly a lack of belief in rituals and traditions.

If cutting a birthday cake is a contemporary tradition, lighting the lamp every evening is a timeless tradition but it is not considered 'cool' enough for most 'educated' folks. Sadly, this also reflects in the energy inside homes and between family members. As many believe, "The family that prays together remains strong forever."

The 'deepam' routine makes a huge difference to the energy at home - difficult to quantify in words but you will experience the amazing positivity and aishwaryam it brings if this is done with Bhakti and Shraddha every day. I have experienced it myself and only then written this. Glad you liked this post too.

Saree Woes 2

Our earlier discussion on Saree Woes really perked up my spirits. A big thanks to all of you for pepping me up. Okay, here's the good news. There was an unexpected late night party that I had to attend in Gurgaon. To be honest, I haven't had the time or energy to attend any such parties after Adi was born. I was sure I wouldn't have the confidence to make conversation with the glitterati, let alone feel confident to carry off wearing a saree. This is one of those parties where you have to be dressed very formally. Well, at the end of a working woman's day, you hardly feel ready to attend one of these parties looking like a moron, right? So, with very little preparation and very few hours left, I called on all the gods in Heaven to help me look a little younger and prettier since I don't have the magic to look young all on my own. Although I was tempted to wear one of my awesome Kancheevaram treasures, I knew it would be very difficult to drape it without any h...

Your feedback and suggestions motivated me to write in the only manner that I know: from the heart. Thank you all for the love and patience. A big thanks to all my Twitter friends who have placed their trust in me and humbled me with their overwhelming support, friendship and acts of kindness. As the rules for accepting this blog award make it necessary for me to share 7 facts about myself, here we go: 1. Kochi is my favorite city. It's in my soul 24X7. 2. I dislike certain traits in people such as dishonesty/corruption, boasting, constantly finding fault or being judgmental about others to camouflage their own faults, leading purposeless but extravagant lifestyles and taking advantage of friendships for wrong...

What's Your Favorite Cake?

Khan Market is one of my favorite places, not only because it is a place where stories can be plucked from people's conversations and mannerisms but this is an amazing hub for food lovers. You can find all types of food that is sure to appeal to your sense of taste. Here is a yummy walnut cake from Sugar&Spice. From the moment you enter their store, you will find yourself bumping into either foreigners looking through different types of cheese (Belgian, French, Danish etc) or Indians who pretend to be just like the foreigners wearing those outrageously expensive 'phoren' perfumes and even sounding like them! God, when will we learn to respect being us, I really don't know, but I couldn't resist this walnut cake. It has a slightly nutty flavors and isn't all that sweet but if you like tasting exotic stuff, this one's for you so have it! What's your favorite cake? Do you make it or buy it? Tell me all about it.
