Best time to light diya

Want to know when is the best time to light diya or deepam at home? In most Hindu homes, 'deepam' or 'diya' is lit at least twice - once in the morning and then in the evening. For both times, brass is considered to be auspicious for lighting deepam or lamp at home. Clay diyas are also considered auspicious for lighting at home. When lighting diyas on Fridays, it is better to use ghee than oil, if possible.

When Should I Start Lighting Diyas?
The symbolic shift begins from darkess to light. Therefore, in the evenings, light diya before sunset to usher in divine blessings into your home.

What time should we light the diya in the evening?
An ideal time would be to light the diya at least half an hour before sunset - this is the golden gateway - when the colour of the sky changes completely.

Can we do pooja at 3 am?
Yes you can do pooja at 3 am - from 3.30 am onwards, as it is considered to be Bramhamuhurtham, a sacred time to undertake meditation, prayer and sadhana.

Is it Brahmamuhurta at 3 am?
It is believed that Brahmamuhurta begins at around 3.30 am.

Can we light diyas at 4pm?
Typically, we don't see sunset at 4 pm. If sunset is at 4 pm, you can light diya.

How long do you let your diya burn?
This varies from one person to another. It is important to decide how you want to do this. You cannot extinguish it at different times each day - be punctual with your sadhana and completion of your prayers - this is important to your routine. Most people let the deepam or diya burn out naturally. In some homes, it is extinguished gently immediately after prayers are completed. In my parents' home, the diya is gently extinguished only before everyone goes to sleep. Most importantly, trust your heart as that is where your Ishta Devata resides.

When to light a lamp in the puja room?
Every morning at sunrise and every evening before or at sunset.

Whatever you do, offer it with sincerity and love in your heart. Our Devatas are watching, they know when we offer mechanically.

You maybe wondering, "How do they know?"

Because Devatas are not separate from us - they are indwellers of our heart. They know exactly what we are thinking, why are we making offerings.

That is why it is important to make offerings with purity of mind and body.

As Mary Oliver says, "Attention is the beginning of devotion."

Even if it is a leaf that you are offering, as Sri Krishna tells Arjuna in the Bhagawad Gita, do it with absolute love in your heart.[READ: Bhima's Devotion]

Remember, the words of Einstein, "Blind belief in authority is the greatest enemy of Truth."

Trust your heart, learn through your own experiences and trust your own self first.

Stay blessed and happy as you light the lamp every day.

Gayatri Mantra as Panchamukhi: Get it right or let it go

Most people do not understand the importance of chanting the Gayatri mantra because they are not aware of its power. It is only when I began to read Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba's teachings that I learned how sacred and powerful the chanting of the Gayatri mantra is.    The Vedas represent the breath of God. The Gayatri mantra is the very basis of the Vedas. Try not to undertake chanting the Gayatri mantra as a light endeavor or as a hobby. It has to be chanted with faith, discipline and purity of mind and body. Be steady with your sadhana if you want to reap the spiritual dividend associated with the Gayatri mantra  and never once hesitate once you decide to do it.  Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba said that the Gayatri Mantra is referred to as Pancha Mukhi, the Goddess with five faces that represent the five pranas or life forces. Here's more on it. .  Also read: The Power of OM  and Dark Night of the Soul Chant the Gayatri Mantra correctly...

The Ugly Truth about Caste in Kerala

Many years ago, when I wrote this post on Kerala's caste system, I had not considered that people would start sending in abusive comments about one caste over the other. It baffles me that this is how Indians, all of us, continue to judge each other on account of caste differences.  [ READ: Guru Kripa: Powerful Lessons at the Lotus Feet ] My question is - why do you ABUSE any caste or community? I suggest that you read about the lives of great Masters and their stories - none of them judged anyone on the basis of caste.  You can read the life stories of Sri Adi Shankara Bhagawadpada, Tulsidas, Jnaneshwar, Namadev, Sri Aurobindo, Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Paramahansa Yogananda, Shirdi Sai Baba, and many more Gurus in Sanathana Dharma. NONE of them endorse these caste hierarchies in Bhakti Marga. Assuming that Guru Sampradaya does not appeal to your sensibilities, do read this  new book 'Ants among Elephants' written by Sujatha Gidla, who writes about herself as being bor...

Why chant Ramayana during the month of Karkidakam

For Keralites across the world who follow the Malayalam calendar, today marks the beginning of the month of Karkidakam. This month, which, decades ago, was known and slightly feared for its torrential rains and negative impact on the health, wealth and well being of Kerala's rural community.  Also read: The Power of OM  and   Dark Night of the Soul Why chant Ramayana during Karkidakam To ward off the negative energy unleashed by Nature and its possible  repercussions  on one's family's overall well being, the wise elders introduced the timeless tradition of every family reading the Ramayana as an oral, spiritual tradition. Thus, it goes without saying that for Keralites who embrace these traditions, the act of reading the Ramayana is as much a spiritual cleansing as it is a kind of tradition they can pass on to bond with their loved family members, particularly children. In the Ramayana, there is no 'preaching of principles' but you are taken through...
