How to block negative energy

Wondering how to block negative energy in the house?  As a child, I used to watch my mother and my aunts light the evening nilavilakku every day. In those days, OTT platforms and TV channels were mostly absent. Today, I appreciate and respect their unwavering routine, their deep reverence for Sandhya Vandanam or prayers at the time of sunset and their Bhakti.

According to Jyothish Shastra, which is revered as the ancient Vedic science, our homes are not just physical spaces, but energy fields that can nurture or deplete us. Just as we have daily baths to cleanse our bodies, it is essential to purify our living spaces and to ensure a flow of positive energy.

Blocking negative energy is a daily essential practice for your well-being.

How do I remove negative energy in my home?

  • Open your windows every morning. Let the Sun's energy cleanse it. The same applies when it rains so that it cleanses your home thoroughly.
  • Remove any unwanted items at the doorstep of your home. This is where Goddess Mahalakshmi is believed to reside. Do not keep footwear, waste bins at the front of your doorstep.
  • Remove cobwebs regularly as these can strengthen negative energy.
  • Place a bowl of sea salt in the corners of rooms, especially where the energy feels heavy or depressing. Sea salt can absorb negativity. Change it weekly and dispose it by diluting it in a small glass bowl of water, let it dissolve and you can wash it off in the kitchen sink once it dissolves.
  • Keep fresh flowers in your living room as it adds natural positivity.
  • Light a brass lamp every morning and evening.
  • Every evening, take out a solid brass bell. Ring it in every room of your home. The sound of the bell should be crystal clear. Ringing the bell is believed to toss out negative energies in our home.
  • Chant mantras, such as the Gayatri Mantra or Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra, even for just a few minutes, energises your home.
  • You can also sing bhajans, kirtans and chant Hanuman Chalisa for best effect.

Which salt is used to eliminate negative energy?

Use sea salt with clear crystals which you can see and feel. It absorbs negative energy in your home and it is an effective medium to restore positive energy.

How to pray against bad energy?

Chant Hanuman Chalisa and Lalitha Sahasranama regularly. Have faith.

How do you know if you are affected by negative energy?

  • Feeling depressed, low energy and sad without any reason
  • You find it difficult to undertake any task or to complete it - as though there is no will power to even get started
  • Recurring dreams that show ominous figures and frighten you
How do I shut down a negative person?
  • Keep away from people with negative vibes or negative energy
  • Chant your Guru mantra or Ishta Devata mantra
  • Chant Gayatri mantra, Hanuman Chalisa and Lalitha Sahasranama regularly
  • Avoid bad company. My guru used to say that if you wrap fish in a newspaper, no matter how good the newspaper is, it will smell bad. The same happens when we engage with people who have negative energy.
Can mirrors absorb negative energy?
Avoid keeping cracked mirrors or fogged mirrors at home. If a mirror begins to turn totally foggy on its own, remove it or seal off that space. In my home, the wardrobe area had a full length mirror of a well-known brand.

On its own, the entire mirror turned foggy and began to turn black all over. I tried to clean it and nothing changed and I simply left it. I was told it would be too expensive to seal it.

After a few months, my health took a huge hit. I began having frightening dreams. I was hospitalised in a critical condition and underwent tremendous difficulties. The strangest thing is there were no apparent symptoms for a doctor's diagnosis!

It is essential for me to state that I have no proof that the mirror at home had any negative energy. But my experience has taught me a lesson and when I returned home, I sealed off the mirror. Thereafter, my health improved.

Where not to hang a mirror?
A mirror amplifies what it reflects. Do not hang a mirror where there is clutter that reflects back on it. Avoid a mirror which reflects your bed as well.

Does sunlight remove negative energy?
Yes, sunlight is known to dispel darkness and negative energy.

Where do you put salt for good luck?
Place it in your living room in a way that is close to your front door but no one else can see it or step on it.

How to not let people's negative energy affect you?
  • Trust God to guide you at all times
  • Have faith in your Ishta Devata and Guru
  • Have self-confidence and set clear boundaries with negative people
  • Disengage to preserve your space and peace of mind
  • Do not engage with people who rob you of peace of mind
  • Wear vibhuti on your forehead as it protects you from negative energy
  • Wear kumkum on your forehead for Devi's instant protection
  • An age-old remedy is to create a shield for your body through affirmation
The best way to block negative energy is to intensify your daily sadhana.
Offer namasmarana, prayers, bhajans, meditating on your Ishta Devata and listening to Vishnu Sahasranama and Lalitha Sahasranama daily.

Saree Woes 2

Our earlier discussion on Saree Woes really perked up my spirits. A big thanks to all of you for pepping me up. Okay, here's the good news. There was an unexpected late night party that I had to attend in Gurgaon. To be honest, I haven't had the time or energy to attend any such parties after Adi was born. I was sure I wouldn't have the confidence to make conversation with the glitterati, let alone feel confident to carry off wearing a saree. This is one of those parties where you have to be dressed very formally. Well, at the end of a working woman's day, you hardly feel ready to attend one of these parties looking like a moron, right? So, with very little preparation and very few hours left, I called on all the gods in Heaven to help me look a little younger and prettier since I don't have the magic to look young all on my own. Although I was tempted to wear one of my awesome Kancheevaram treasures, I knew it would be very difficult to drape it without any h...

Thank You for the Kreativ Award

Lord, thank you for your love and grace in every moment of my life and for finding me worthy of this award.  A big thanks to Nivedita for this Award. I don't know if I deserve it but you make me feel that I do. You, the reader, helped me improve through every post. Your feedback and suggestions motivated me to write in the only manner that I know: from the heart. Thank you all for the love and patience. A big thanks to all my Twitter friends who have placed their trust in me and humbled me with their overwhelming support, friendship and acts of kindness. As the rules for accepting this blog award make it necessary for me to share 7 facts about myself, here we go: 1. Kochi is my favorite city. It's in my soul 24X7. 2. I dislike certain traits in people such as dishonesty/corruption, boasting, constantly finding fault or being judgmental about others to camouflage their own faults, leading purposeless but extravagant lifestyles and taking advantage of friendships for wrong...

What's Your Favorite Cake?

Khan Market is one of my favorite places, not only because it is a place where stories can be plucked from people's conversations and mannerisms but this is an amazing hub for food lovers. You can find all types of food that is sure to appeal to your sense of taste. Here is a yummy walnut cake from Sugar&Spice. From the moment you enter their store, you will find yourself bumping into either foreigners looking through different types of cheese (Belgian, French, Danish etc) or Indians who pretend to be just like the foreigners wearing those outrageously expensive 'phoren' perfumes and even sounding like them! God, when will we learn to respect being us, I really don't know, but I couldn't resist this walnut cake. It has a slightly nutty flavors and isn't all that sweet but if you like tasting exotic stuff, this one's for you so have it! What's your favorite cake? Do you make it or buy it? Tell me all about it.

The Ugly Truth about Caste in Kerala

Many years ago, when I wrote this post on Kerala's caste system, I had not considered that people would start sending in abusive comments about one caste over the other. It baffles me that this is how Indians, all of us, continue to judge each other on account of caste differences.  [ READ: Guru Kripa: Powerful Lessons at the Lotus Feet ] My question is - why do you ABUSE any caste or community? I suggest that you read about the lives of great Masters and their stories - none of them judged anyone on the basis of caste.  You can read the life stories of Sri Adi Shankara Bhagawadpada, Tulsidas, Jnaneshwar, Namadev, Sri Aurobindo, Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Paramahansa Yogananda, Shirdi Sai Baba, and many more Gurus in Sanathana Dharma. NONE of them endorse these caste hierarchies in Bhakti Marga. Assuming that Guru Sampradaya does not appeal to your sensibilities, do read this  new book 'Ants among Elephants' written by Sujatha Gidla, who writes about herself as being bor...
