Which is the first movie of Jayaram? Meet an amazing artist with Prem Nazir's voice!

If you were to ask me about actor Jayaram, I would say he's a fine artist who is blessed to speak in Prem Nazir's voice and style! In the 80s, Malayalam cinema witnessed a new refreshing burst of talent from the world of mimicry. Everyone loved the charm with which he speaks like Malayalam cinema's 'Prem Nazir'.

Jayaram's first movie in Malayalam
With a brilliant debut in Padmarajan's 'Aparan', Jayaram was unstoppable! At a time when mimicry was looked down in the world of entertainment, Jayaram's style of presenting mimicry won the admiration of Malayalis across the globe.

Overnight, video libraries were tackling a challenge of sourcing more copies of his mimicry performance video tape. Simply put, people flocked to watch this refreshing young 'hero' perform on stage!

Jayaram's first mimicry video a huge hit
In the 80s, I remember watching his video in Africa and absolutely loved it. To my mind, Jayaram stood out mainly because he was so full of passion for his craft. The excitement of performing seemed to bubble through his every move and action, infusing a dynamic energy to an already electrifying performance.

In every artist's life, there is a 'turning point' or a 'big break'. A reluctant Padmarajan was convinced by his son's persistence to watch Jayaram's mimicry video tape and he found himself impressed by the young artist. Unexpectedly, he runs into eminent bureaucrat-turned-writer Malayatoor Ramakrishnan, the very same artist's uncle. The uncle asks him to consider Jayaram for one of his movies.

Strange coincidence or destiny in the making?

But that's exactly how stars shine!

Jayaram, as a star and a shining one, is forever linked and remembered as 'Padmarajan's find'. They worked in several super hits together and it is a known fact that Padmarajan considered Jayaram as his own family, not merely as an actor he worked with.

Teaming up with a legendary actor like Padmarajan for his dream debut, the arrival of Jayaram spelled a refreshing change for Malayalam cinema. His effortless charm, next-door-boy's looks and charismatic personality won hearts. He did many films that won over family audiences.

A finer aspect of Jayaram's signature style films was that he brought in a culture of clean and fun-filled family entertainers. For most Malayali families, going to a theatre involves checking whether it is a movie that can be watched with one's elderly parents and young children of all ages.

A powerhouse talent of comedy, humour and mimicry, Jayaram portrayed many romantic roles that brought him more film makers queuing up at his doorstep.

His on-screen chemistry with the lovely actress Parvathy saw fans go giddy to watch their films together. Most of their films were super hits at the box office.

Let me be honest, I love to binge watch Jayaram-Parvathy movies!

They are the most stunning star couple Malayalam cinema has ever seen, God bless their love!

What I respect about Jayaram is not just his fine performances in the 80s and 90s, but his love for temple festivals, all those small traditional details that Malayalis cherish and his amazing respect and humility when he interacts with yesteryear stars like Sheelamma.

The Ugly Truth about Caste in Kerala

Many years ago, when I wrote this post on Kerala's caste system, I had not considered that people would start sending in abusive comments about one caste over the other. It baffles me that this is how Indians, all of us, continue to judge each other on account of caste differences.  [ READ: Guru Kripa: Powerful Lessons at the Lotus Feet ] My question is - why do you ABUSE any caste or community? I suggest that you read about the lives of great Masters and their stories - none of them judged anyone on the basis of caste.  You can read the life stories of Sri Adi Shankara Bhagawadpada, Tulsidas, Jnaneshwar, Namadev, Sri Aurobindo, Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Paramahansa Yogananda, Shirdi Sai Baba, and many more Gurus in Sanathana Dharma. NONE of them endorse these caste hierarchies in Bhakti Marga. Assuming that Guru Sampradaya does not appeal to your sensibilities, do read this  new book 'Ants among Elephants' written by Sujatha Gidla, who writes about herself as being born

How do you light Deepam at home?

How do you light deepam at home? As a child, I loved watching the ritual of my grandmother lighting the deepam or the traditional lamp at home in the evenings. A sense of serenity accompanied her frail figure as she would carefully straighten every wick, dip it into the tiny puddle of oil and light the lamp. As my grandmother would read out the scriptures and chant the prayers, the fragrance of incense sticks and flowers added depth to the experience. In many Hindu homes nowadays, the lighting of the lamp (or the nilavilakku, as Malayalis refer to the traditional lamp in their homes) is not a regular practice. A lot of people have many questions around how to light deepam at home and which oil to use and so on. An important point to keep in mind - Maintain physical cleanliness and hygiene while lighting the lamp. Wear clean clothes while lighting the lamp. Gayatri Mantra as Panchamukhi: Get it right or let it go

Most people do not understand the importance of chanting the Gayatri mantra because they are not aware of its power. It is only when I began to read Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba's teachings that I learned how sacred and powerful the chanting of the Gayatri mantra is.    The Vedas represent the breath of God. The Gayatri mantra is the very basis of the Vedas. Try not to undertake chanting the Gayatri mantra as a light endeavor or as a hobby. It has to be chanted with faith, discipline and purity of mind and body. Be steady with your sadhana if you want to reap the spiritual dividend associated with the Gayatri mantra  and never once hesitate once you decide to do it.  Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba said that the Gayatri Mantra is referred to as Pancha Mukhi, the Goddess with five faces that represent the five pranas or life forces. Here's more on it. .  Also read: The Power of OM   Chant the Gayatri Mantra correctly: Pause Five Times Here are some important thi

Malayalam film Sara 's on Amazon Prime is a bold take on a woman's right to abortion

Sara's Malayalam movie review: Malayalam cinema is known for breaking stereotypes even when its male audience may find it clearly unpalatable. One of the recent Malayalam films this year that I really found thought provoking is 'Sara's' on Amazon Prime despite the fact that it has many sketchy areas in its narrative and I do not support Sara's personal choices. [READ: Prithviraj starrer Mumbai Police breaks stereotypes!] Sara's Malayalam Movie Review: To have a child or not should be a woman's decision 'Sara's' is a film that urges Malayalis to give a 'woman' more independence about deciding whether she is ready to marry, and if she is, if she wants to have a child and if that choice comes under scrutiny, the final choice should be hers alone - it is her body, her life - not the guy's. This is something I personally believe in - a woman should never be forced to do anything against her will by anyone. No matter how you view it, a man

7 Am Arivu (the Seventh Sense) - Why it is spiritually relevant

7 Am Arivu (the Seventh Sense) is a film that I was desperate to watch for two reasons. One, I am a Suriya fan and I had heard so much about his performance in this movie that I didn't want to settle for watching a CD of it and losing the actual cinematic experience. Second, I had read from various bloggers and their reviews that this film revolves around the story of Bodhidharman, a 16th century prince from Tamil Nadu who had mastered knowledge spanning multiple forms of art, and was sent to China to save the people from evil. Once he goes there, the transformation begins for himself and for the people there and he  goes on to become Damo, the father of Shaolin and Kung Fu and hypnotism and such other mystical yet spiritually relevant forms of mind mastery. 7 Am Arivu Goes Over the Top with the Dravidian Rhetoric In 7 Am Arivu, there has been a lot of controversy created by the fact that nearly every character eulogizes about the importance of being Tamil and yes, the Dravidi
