Three Types of Purity to Observe While Preparing Food

If you read in detail about the life of great spiritual masters, you will notice that they are very particular about the type of food they eat and the source of food. While reading the book 'Mejda' about Sri Paramahansa Yogananda, his older brother talks about how their father would not allow them to eat from any unknown household or outside eating place as it was considered 'impure' and he used to say that if we want to stay healthy, we must eat from our own homes where the food we eat is prepared with the love of the mother.

There are similar stories about the Buddha too in this regard because He was very careful about the food He accepted from the followers.

Three types of Purity while Preparing Food
According to the Vedic Hindu tradition, Bhagawan Baba told His earliest devotees that three types of purity or 'shuddhi' should be observed while preparing food.

  • Paathrashuddhi: The vessels in which the food is prepared and served should be clean.
  • Paakashuddhi: The mind and body of the person preparing the food should be clean.
  • Padaarthashuddhi: All the ingredients used for making the food should have been bought with money that has been earned honestly.
Also, Bhagawan Baba taught all devotees to chant 'Bramharpanam' and 'Aham vaishnavaro' mantra to sanctify food before eating it. Most of His devotees and students chant this mantra before eating any type of food.

How to Sanctify Your Food by Chanting Mantra
As we all know now, mantras have the energizing power to protect and the food that we eat is meant to also protect our gross bodies. Blessing our food with a thanksgiving prayer is a great way to sanctify the food that we eat. Blessing our food with mantra is a powerful way to keep the body from absorbing any negative energy or even negative karma that is associated with the preparation of food.

Since many of you may be cynical about what I have stated here, you can check into your religion's spiritual practices regarding preparation and serving of food. The spiritual nuances involved in the preparation of food are clear as daylight for most religions.

CAN PRAYERS AND MANTRAS MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
For those who scoff at religion, spiritual masters and so on, pick up the famous Rujuta Diwekar's book on the Weight Loss Tamasha and you will find that she says that chanting a mantra or saying a prayer before eating food has a very positive impact on the quality and speed of digestion of food in the human body. She says that it also energizes the mind in a positive way and is a stress buster. In fact, she advises her clients to do this.

Therefore, when offering 'prasad' to God, it would be ideal to make it oneself rather than buy from the bakery or any outside source for the simple reason that when you prepare it yourself, you put all your love and energy into it.

@Raks Kitchen - Thanks for stopping by to comment! Cheers!
Swapna, I like the idea of the person who prepares the food to have pure thoughts and the need for the money that bought the ingredients to be earned honestly! GREAT THOUGHTS. There is also the process of doing "Neivedyam"which is an important part of the Hindu tradition. Unfortunately it has become a ritual sans the meaning behind it! Food is linked to the mind- if you are stressed then the food that you eat will have no impact on the body!! It has been medically proved

Saree Woes 2

Our earlier discussion on Saree Woes really perked up my spirits. A big thanks to all of you for pepping me up. Okay, here's the good news. There was an unexpected late night party that I had to attend in Gurgaon. To be honest, I haven't had the time or energy to attend any such parties after Adi was born. I was sure I wouldn't have the confidence to make conversation with the glitterati, let alone feel confident to carry off wearing a saree. This is one of those parties where you have to be dressed very formally. Well, at the end of a working woman's day, you hardly feel ready to attend one of these parties looking like a moron, right? So, with very little preparation and very few hours left, I called on all the gods in Heaven to help me look a little younger and prettier since I don't have the magic to look young all on my own. Although I was tempted to wear one of my awesome Kancheevaram treasures, I knew it would be very difficult to drape it without any h...

Thank You for the Kreativ Award

Lord, thank you for your love and grace in every moment of my life and for finding me worthy of this award.  A big thanks to Nivedita for this Award. I don't know if I deserve it but you make me feel that I do. You, the reader, helped me improve through every post. Your feedback and suggestions motivated me to write in the only manner that I know: from the heart. Thank you all for the love and patience. A big thanks to all my Twitter friends who have placed their trust in me and humbled me with their overwhelming support, friendship and acts of kindness. As the rules for accepting this blog award make it necessary for me to share 7 facts about myself, here we go: 1. Kochi is my favorite city. It's in my soul 24X7. 2. I dislike certain traits in people such as dishonesty/corruption, boasting, constantly finding fault or being judgmental about others to camouflage their own faults, leading purposeless but extravagant lifestyles and taking advantage of friendships for wrong...

What's Your Favorite Cake?

Khan Market is one of my favorite places, not only because it is a place where stories can be plucked from people's conversations and mannerisms but this is an amazing hub for food lovers. You can find all types of food that is sure to appeal to your sense of taste. Here is a yummy walnut cake from Sugar&Spice. From the moment you enter their store, you will find yourself bumping into either foreigners looking through different types of cheese (Belgian, French, Danish etc) or Indians who pretend to be just like the foreigners wearing those outrageously expensive 'phoren' perfumes and even sounding like them! God, when will we learn to respect being us, I really don't know, but I couldn't resist this walnut cake. It has a slightly nutty flavors and isn't all that sweet but if you like tasting exotic stuff, this one's for you so have it! What's your favorite cake? Do you make it or buy it? Tell me all about it.

Want to know when is the best time to light diya or deepam at home? In most Hindu homes, 'deepam' or 'diya' is lit at least twice - once in the morning and then in the evening.
