Significance of Surya Arghya: Right way to offer water to Surya Dev

Wondering how to offer water to Surya Dev daily? In India, it is a common sight to see people offering Surya Arghya in the mornings. On my trip to Sydney last year, I was amazed to see few Indians offering Surya Arghya from the terrace of their apartment society every morning. This shows us how significant Surya Arghya is for Hindus. See below a stunning sculpture of Surya Dev at Sun Temple, Konark. [Read: Why Malayalis Light Nilavilakku and How to Light Deepam]

What Happens If We offer Water to Sun Daily?

We know the scientific importance of the Sun and the benefits of basking in sunlight, which is now medically recoemmended as mandatory to overcome depression! According to the sacred texts in Hinduism, 'Surya Dev', or the Sun God, is 'King of the Navagrahas'.

Imagine your life without the presence of the Sun, a life giving force that shines light and energy into our daily routine. One can say Surya Dev is burning hot all the time, the Sun God is pleased when we offer water.

When we offer water to the Sun daily, the belief is that Surya Dev will shower His blessings with abundance, protection and prosperity in your life, besides good health.

Can we offer water to Sun after 12 pm?

No, the offering of Surya Arghya has to be at the time of sun rise.

Can we give water to Sun on Sunday?

Yes, you can. A recommended practice is to offer water every day.

Can I offer water to Sun during periods?

Yes, you can. There is no restriction. Ensure you have a bath before offering Surya Arghya as an essential practice.

What are the benefits of praying to Surya?

Look at Nature. Can you think of anything that shines brighter than the Sun? The splendour and beauty of the Sun cannot be described in words; in the same way, the benefits of praying to Surya Dev cannot be put into words. However, the Ramayana and Mahabharata have many stories and instances where the worship of Surya Dev is beautifully highlighted through incidents.

For instance, Sri Rama is advised to worship Surya Dev before going into battle with the mighty Ravana. The belief is that anyone who first seeks the blessings of Surya Dev cannot be defeated in battle; enemies do not stand a chance when facing the divine splendour of the mighty Sun.

How to impress Lord Surya?

Offer Surya Arghya with reverence and love; listen or recite the Aditya Stotram every morning. You can also chant the Gayatri mantra.

Maintain a disciplined daily routine to win the blessings of Surya Dev.

To strengthen the Sun, it is always best to serve people in any capacity.

After all, the Sun serves and expects nothing in return; this is a lesson for us.

Which flower to offer Surya Dev?

It is said that red flowers please Surya Dev. If you do not have red flowres, add a dash of kumkum or vermillion to offer the Sun.

How do you light Deepam at home?

How do you light deepam at home? As a child, I loved watching the ritual of my grandmother lighting the deepam or the traditional lamp at home in the evenings. A sense of serenity accompanied her frail figure as she would carefully straighten every wick, dip it into the tiny puddle of oil and light the lamp. As my grandmother would read out the scriptures and chant the prayers, the fragrance of incense sticks and flowers added depth to the experience. In many Hindu homes nowadays, the lighting of the lamp (or the nilavilakku, as Malayalis refer to the traditional lamp in their homes) is not a regular practice. A lot of people have many questions around how to light deepam at home and which oil to use and so on. An important point to keep in mind - Maintain physical cleanliness and hygiene while lighting the lamp. Wear clean clothes while lighting the lamp. The Ugly Truth about Caste in Kerala

Many years ago, when I wrote this post on Kerala's caste system, I had not considered that people would start sending in abusive comments about one caste over the other. It baffles me that this is how Indians, all of us, continue to judge each other on account of caste differences.  [ READ: Guru Kripa: Powerful Lessons at the Lotus Feet ] My question is - why do you ABUSE any caste or community? I suggest that you read about the lives of great Masters and their stories - none of them judged anyone on the basis of caste.  You can read the life stories of Sri Adi Shankara Bhagawadpada, Tulsidas, Jnaneshwar, Namadev, Sri Aurobindo, Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Paramahansa Yogananda, Shirdi Sai Baba, and many more Gurus in Sanathana Dharma. NONE of them endorse these caste hierarchies in Bhakti Marga. Assuming that Guru Sampradaya does not appeal to your sensibilities, do read this  new book 'Ants among Elephants' written by Sujatha Gidla, who writes about herself as being born

What is the story of Shivaji? The great son of a great mother called Jijabai

Chhatrapati Shivaji, the great Maratha warrior whose guerrilla warfare tactics are fleetingly mentioned in Indian history textbooks, is increasingly relevant today. A Hindi movie 'Tanhaji' starring Ajay Devgn and Kajol got many of us curious to know more about this warrior. Sadly, we don't seem to have much information in our history textbooks!   [ READ: Significance of Surya Argya  and How do you Light Deepam? ] Source: Anjali Natarajan on Twitter  Shivaji Maharaj: The Great Son of a Great Mother Jijabai The more I read about Shivaji Maharaj,   the more fascinated I am.   I wondered why we have learned so little about this great warrior and his great mother Jijabai, and why public memory has been totally erased from most history books! KR Meera's The Gospel of Yudas: A gripping, disturbing portrayal of the Naxalite movement during Emergency in Kerala

Winter mornings are great to read gripping novels that explore the heart's longing for the forbidden , but you need the comfort of a warm sweater, an inviting quilt and a cozy bed to snuggle into.  And lots of chai - piping hot, laced with a dash of cardamom. That is how I read the first sentence of  KR Meera's novel,  The Gospel of  Yudas , translated by Rajesh Rajamohan, and the sentence simply leapt   into my consciousness as I read the words, " A traitor can never sleep. His hunger is eternal; his thirst, insatiable. " I HAVE to say this: This blurb took my breath away - the different shades of green-blue tones and the sinking girl evoked strong emotions even before I touched the first page. And you feel a spark of rebellion stem from within when you read poignant sentences like this, " In our lake, dead bodies raced among themselves daily to find their way to the surface , " and " In our feudal home - our Naalukettu - before I went t
