Book Review: Reecha Agarwal Goyal's book 'Such is HER Life' explores what it means to be a woman in today's world

Labelled as a 'small book with big learnings', Reecha Agarwal Goyal's 'Such is HER Life' takes a reader through a heart wrenching journey of thought-provoking musings.  Imagine a little book that you could hold  close to your heart and read on the move. Nothing too heavy that it bogs you down. It feels best when the book is light enough and delightful enough to read like a Twitter feed, with pearls of wisdom. [Do read: When the Chief Fell in Love ]

This little book is an exploration on what it is to be a woman in today's world. Some snippets make you want to cry, others make you simply smile and there are many that will provoke your thoughts as the finer nuances sink in.

Here are some:

'She was never considered a perfect woman for the shape of her roti was always a determining factor.'

'Their biggest  complaint was: You are different.
She loved the compliment.'

'Of all the battles she had fought, those between the heart and the mind, were the most ruthless.'

Every snippet is like a dart thrown into your heart. It strikes the right note, with a sharpness that leaves you almost breathless.

Somewhere along the way, these snippets remind me of the 20th  century's French existentialists who treated life as being so absurd that the only way forward is to create your own meaning from it.

And in a deeper, more intense ways, that's exactly why  'Such is HER Life', published by FingerPrint! Publishing, an imprint of Prakash Books, is as close as it gets when it comes to prompting you to create your own meaning and space in life.

Some wounds never heal and only women understand this. So, I leave you with this: 'She bought a lot of clocks. They said Time heals everything.'

Now it's your turn. What books have impressed you recently?

The Ugly Truth about Caste in Kerala

Many years ago, when I wrote this post on Kerala's caste system, I had not considered that people would start sending in abusive comments about one caste over the other. It baffles me that this is how Indians, all of us, continue to judge each other on account of caste differences.  [ READ: Guru Kripa: Powerful Lessons at the Lotus Feet ] My question is - why do you ABUSE any caste or community? I suggest that you read about the lives of great Masters and their stories - none of them judged anyone on the basis of caste.  You can read the life stories of Sri Adi Shankara Bhagawadpada, Tulsidas, Jnaneshwar, Namadev, Sri Aurobindo, Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Paramahansa Yogananda, Shirdi Sai Baba, and many more Gurus in Sanathana Dharma. NONE of them endorse these caste hierarchies in Bhakti Marga. Assuming that Guru Sampradaya does not appeal to your sensibilities, do read this  new book 'Ants among Elephants' written by Sujatha Gidla, who writes about herself as being bor...

Best time to light diya

Want to know when is the best time to light diya or deepam at home? In most Hindu homes, 'deepam' or 'diya' is lit at least twice - once in the morning and then in the evening. Gayatri Mantra as Panchamukhi: Get it right or let it go

Most people do not understand the importance of chanting the Gayatri mantra because they are not aware of its power. It is only when I began to read Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba's teachings that I learned how sacred and powerful the chanting of the Gayatri mantra is.   [Subscribe to my weekly newsletter now]   The Vedas represent the breath of God. The Gayatri mantra is the very basis of the Vedas. Try not to undertake chanting the Gayatri mantra as a light endeavor or as a hobby. It has to be chanted with faith, discipline and purity of mind and body. Be steady with your sadhana if you want to reap the spiritual dividend associated with the Gayatri mantra  and never once hesitate once you decide to do it.  Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba said that the Gayatri Mantra is referred to as Pancha Mukhi, the Goddess with five faces that represent the five pranas or life forces. Who is Meher Baba? The Irani Zorastrian Perfect Master

Few Indians know about Meher Baba, known as the Perfect Master, worshiped as 'Avatar Baba' by the Parsi community. His devotees are called 'Baba lovers'.  For instance, Bollywood's Shiamak Davar is a very well-known 'Baba lover'.  I am not a follower but I have experienced the electrifying love energy that is a pure and pristine extension of his community of followers.                                Image: Avatar Meher Baba Lovers on Facebook Meher Baba was born into a well-to-do family in Pune.
