Start of the Day: Welcome December 2011

Start of the Day, I couldn't imagine that it is almost the end of a year. It's hard to believe that it is already December 2011. Seems like yesterday or maybe a few months ago that the year 2011 had been welcomed. How time 'flies - that was my first thought when the realization struck me. And you know what, I can't wait for this year to end.

Yes, like many of you, I too love December for a variety of reasons. The festive spirit of Christmas, the scent of home made wine, raisin and plum cakes, the decorating of Christmas tree, the choir singing, the joy of waiting for a new year to unfold - its a heady season indeed. It's also the best time to contemplate on the year that was.

For me, personally, 2011 has been a most difficult year to sail through, the tests and tribulations were unexpected, painful and difficult. But I think its made me a stronger person spiritually.

I've read somewhere in Sri Paramahansa Yogananda's writings as follows, "You are spiritually tested where it is likely to hurt the most. If you handle it by surrendering to God to guide you to deal with it and without any negativity, anger or malice, you win the test and it makes you stronger spiritually. If you react by blaming God, comparing others happy lives with yours and constantly making others unhappy for your situation, then you have failed the test. The same test will come into your life over and over in higher degrees till you learn to deal with it and grow spiritually."

In that sense, I think I scraped through and managed a decent, just-pass because I entrusted my pain to God. Simply put, this year brought me tremendous changes that I couldn't possibly have dreamt of, especially in terms of spiritual growth and spiritual abundance. Unbelievable as it may sound, but every thought, word and deed that has guided me this year has been truly divine and a reflection of my Higher Self.

Recently some one on Facebook asked me, "What do you do?"

I said, sincerely, "I make others happy about their lives by being there and listening."

I really meant it. There are hundreds of things that I do. But what really makes me 'me' is when I make others happy about themselves. Being the reason of others' happiness - that is God's work. What can be more beautiful or humbling than that? Everything else ...well, does it even matter? Thank you, God.

To all my friends, thank you!

Very enriching post.
Everyone has trials and tests accompanied by pain in varying degrees according to his/her poorva karma. It is only in such times our minds turn to God and prayer. It is for this specific reason that Kunti, mother of Pandavas, requested God to burden her always with hardship.
it is pleasing to know that after the trials you could make some spiritual progress.A quote would be apt here."A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials."

"I make others happy about their lives by being there and listening." - that is exactly what you do :) I can say that clearly cos I have experienced it myself :) Hope and pray that you'll be there like that always :)
@KP Parthasarathi - Yes, thank you sir. That story you mentioned, my father always tells me whenever we used to face difficulties in life. And that beautiful quote you've added just makes it more complete, thank you!

@Pramoda: Thank you for understanding. That means a lot to me.
@Vinita Santosh: Thanks so much for those kind, loving words. I trust that God will guide me to do that always as long as I live, that is my prayer to the Almighty. I may fail but I still would have at least given it a best try. Thanks Vinita!

Saree Woes 2

Our earlier discussion on Saree Woes really perked up my spirits. A big thanks to all of you for pepping me up. Okay, here's the good news. There was an unexpected late night party that I had to attend in Gurgaon. To be honest, I haven't had the time or energy to attend any such parties after Adi was born. I was sure I wouldn't have the confidence to make conversation with the glitterati, let alone feel confident to carry off wearing a saree. This is one of those parties where you have to be dressed very formally. Well, at the end of a working woman's day, you hardly feel ready to attend one of these parties looking like a moron, right? So, with very little preparation and very few hours left, I called on all the gods in Heaven to help me look a little younger and prettier since I don't have the magic to look young all on my own. Although I was tempted to wear one of my awesome Kancheevaram treasures, I knew it would be very difficult to drape it without any h...

Thank You for the Kreativ Award

Lord, thank you for your love and grace in every moment of my life and for finding me worthy of this award.  A big thanks to Nivedita for this Award. I don't know if I deserve it but you make me feel that I do. You, the reader, helped me improve through every post. Your feedback and suggestions motivated me to write in the only manner that I know: from the heart. Thank you all for the love and patience. A big thanks to all my Twitter friends who have placed their trust in me and humbled me with their overwhelming support, friendship and acts of kindness. As the rules for accepting this blog award make it necessary for me to share 7 facts about myself, here we go: 1. Kochi is my favorite city. It's in my soul 24X7. 2. I dislike certain traits in people such as dishonesty/corruption, boasting, constantly finding fault or being judgmental about others to camouflage their own faults, leading purposeless but extravagant lifestyles and taking advantage of friendships for wrong...

What's Your Favorite Cake?

Khan Market is one of my favorite places, not only because it is a place where stories can be plucked from people's conversations and mannerisms but this is an amazing hub for food lovers. You can find all types of food that is sure to appeal to your sense of taste. Here is a yummy walnut cake from Sugar&Spice. From the moment you enter their store, you will find yourself bumping into either foreigners looking through different types of cheese (Belgian, French, Danish etc) or Indians who pretend to be just like the foreigners wearing those outrageously expensive 'phoren' perfumes and even sounding like them! God, when will we learn to respect being us, I really don't know, but I couldn't resist this walnut cake. It has a slightly nutty flavors and isn't all that sweet but if you like tasting exotic stuff, this one's for you so have it! What's your favorite cake? Do you make it or buy it? Tell me all about it.

The Ugly Truth about Caste in Kerala

Many years ago, when I wrote this post on Kerala's caste system, I had not considered that people would start sending in abusive comments about one caste over the other. It baffles me that this is how Indians, all of us, continue to judge each other on account of caste differences.  [ READ: Guru Kripa: Powerful Lessons at the Lotus Feet ] My question is - why do you ABUSE any caste or community? I suggest that you read about the lives of great Masters and their stories - none of them judged anyone on the basis of caste.  You can read the life stories of Sri Adi Shankara Bhagawadpada, Tulsidas, Jnaneshwar, Namadev, Sri Aurobindo, Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Paramahansa Yogananda, Shirdi Sai Baba, and many more Gurus in Sanathana Dharma. NONE of them endorse these caste hierarchies in Bhakti Marga. Assuming that Guru Sampradaya does not appeal to your sensibilities, do read this  new book 'Ants among Elephants' written by Sujatha Gidla, who writes about herself as being bor...
